CSIRS-UIU Highlights Technical Innovation in Plastic Waste Management at “Save Canal, Save City” Learning Sharing Discussion Session

The Center for Smart Infrastructure Resilience and Sustainability (CSIRS-UIU) was proud to take part in the learning-sharing event titled “Save Canal, Save City – Scaling Best Practices in Plastic Waste Management”, organized under the PLEASE Project by RedOrange Communication on 14th May,2025.

At the heart of this knowledge exchange, Dr. Md. Mujibur Rahman, Director of CSIRS and Professor at UIU, delivered a technical presentation on the innovative floating barrier system developed for the Kallyanpur canal. His session outlined the engineering principles behind the barrier’s modular design, its adaptation to variable canal depths, and its role in intercepting floating plastic waste to restore canal flow and protect urban waterways. The CSIRS technical team including Dr. Tariq Bin Yousuf, Dr. Rumana Afrin, and Ms. Syeda Aniqa Anjum, who contributed to the design of the floating barrier were also in attendance.

The presentation showcased how academic expertise, urban innovation, and community partnership can come together to address Dhaka’s growing urban environmental challenges. CSIRS provided technical support to the project, complementing the extensive campaign and community-based interventions led by Red Orange Limited in collaboration with Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC).

The event brought together key stakeholders from the DNCC, DSCC, UNOPS, and the Embassy of the Netherlands in Bangladesh, along with urban resilience practitioners and civil society representatives, sparking meaningful dialogue on replicating and scaling such innovations across Dhaka and beyond.
