The International Training Network (ITN) of the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), in collaboration with the Center for Smart Infrastructure Resilience and Sustainability (CSIRS) of United International University (UIU), organized a three-day Professional Training on Municipal Solid Waste Management from 4 to 6 November 2025.
This training program marked the first collaborative initiative between ITN-BUET and CSIRS-UIU. It brought together participants from the Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE), various municipalities, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), the private sector, and academic institutions.
The sessions were facilitated by renowned experts in the field of Solid Waste Management (SWM), including: Prof. Dr. Md. Mujibur Rahman (UIU) , Prof. Dr. Rowshan Mamtaz (BUET) , Dr. Tariq Bin Yousuf (SWM Specialist), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rumana Afrin (UIU), Mr. Iftekhar Enayetullah (Waste Concern), Dr. Abdullah Al Mamun (DoE) , Mr. Mazharul Islam (PRISM Foundation) and Mr. Alok Kumar Majumder (RedOrange Limited).
The training featured technical sessions, group, and field visits to a material recovery center managed by GarbageMan Limited and to the medical waste management facility at the National Institute of Neuro Sciences & Hospital. The sessions covered a wide range of topics including integrated solid waste management, e-waste, medical waste, plastic waste, as well as the behavioral and financial aspects of SWM.
The inaugural session began with opening remarks by Prof. Emeritus Dr. M. Rezwan Khan, followed by an address from the Honorable Vice Chancellor of UIU, Prof. Dr. Md. Abul Kashem Mia, who commended the initiative and emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in promoting sustainable waste management practices.
The closing ceremony was attended by the Honorable Vice Chancellor of BUET, Prof. Dr. Abu Borhan Mohammad Badruzzaman, and Dr. Mohammad Shafiullah Siddique Bhuiyan, Executive Engineer, DSCC. The program concluded with a certificate distribution ceremony and a feedback session from participants, marking the successful completion of the training program.
